System Requirements: 2.2 and up

It’s been a while since we last featured a hands-on with the latest and greatest paid (and free) Android applications n’ games from the Google Play Store, but now that things are finally dwindling down event-wise, we can finally get back into the swing of things. Today we’re bringing you yet another gem, this one is titled Bit Dungeon and it comes to you from developer KintoGames. Bit Dungeon can most easily be described as the Legend of Zelda — if you were only given 1 single life.

It looks like 8-bit simplistic role-playing games are not going away anytime soon, since Legend of Zelda was just that great. bit Dungeon doesn’t really stray far from the same concept, but it also dabbles just a little bit in the rogue-like territory. Too little to count it as one, unfortunately, but it’s still quite good, nevertheless. The story is expectantly absent; you are playing as some sort of angsty dark knight as he needs to run through the various dungeons and defeat the many monsters, standing in his way. The battle structure is as simple as can be and you don’t even need to press anything.

The dungeons are differing by their background and enemies that get spawned, as well as the difficulty and loot. You can get some upgrades and items that improve your critical strikes or add magical damage
Your input is restricted to moving the guy around via tapping wherever you want him to go and coming up-close to the enemies so that he would try to stab them. Besides that, you can also pick up various objects that fall out of different enemies and equip the ones you think are better. The level structure is really primitive, as well. Each level consists of seven interconnected chambers, each one having several monsters, as well as a couple of chests that you can pick up after you defeat everyone in the room. When you do this, you also get a key that you can use to unlock the door to the next chamber. At the end of each dungeon, you need to defeat a boss and continue to the next one. The dungeons are differing by their background and enemies that get spawned, as well as the difficulty and loot. You can get some upgrades and items that improve your critical strikes or add magical damage – nothing completely altering the gameplay, though. You should also be really careful about your hit-points and pick up refills as much as you can, since death is permanent here and you’re going to have to start from the beginning, which is pretty discouraging, seeing as there’s nothing to unlock while you play and nothing to improve your starting position. In other words, what you start with at the beginning is what you’ll start with, every time, which makes bit Dungeon really repetitive. The game is too great to not replay it afterwards, but when you die, your natural reaction is going to be to switch the game off – not out of anger or anything, but it’s not really interesting to get all the way back. Sure, the dungeon levels are going to be different, but it’s still quite irritating. Aside from that, bit Dungeon is a great homage to classic RPGs and has a great and consistent gameplay, as well as nice, classic design.
